Cycling & Mountain Biking
If two wheels are your jam, we’ve got the perfect plan.
The Clutha District offers a variety of cycling and mountain biking trails from a two-day Great Ride to a quick town leg stretcher for the kids.
First up is The Clutha Gold Cycling and Walking Trail, which covers 73 kilometres along the Clutha River from Lake Roxburgh to Lawrence. Plan your trip from late 2023 and you’ll be rewarded with a lakeside start and finish, when the trail extends to 136 kilometres through to Lake Waihola.
A great option for the little ones is the six kilometre Blair Athol Walkway in Balclutha, which has multiple starting points. A great family friendly option is to start at Naish Park half way along the walkway. Mum and Dad can walk or ride the return track while the kids zoom ahead.
If a ride with nature views is your thing, the Government Track - a 17 kilometre return climb through the beech-and mānuka-forested Waipori Valley, is a great choice. As is the loop track around the Lake Tuakitoto wetland - a nice, easy, flat 15 kilometre ride.
