Clinton

Surrounded by gentle rolling hills, Clinton is a small rural town in South Otago famous for its sculpture of five Clydesdale horses representing the area’s rich agricultural history.

Situated between the larger towns of Balclutha and Gore, and handy to the natural wonders of The Catlins, Clinton is known for some of New Zealand’s finest fly fishing.

The rural settlement town was known to Māori as Popotunoa, like its namesake local bush-clad hill. It was renamed Clinton in 1873 after former British Secretary of State for the Colonies, Henry Pelham-Clinton. Its local economy began on the land and today it still revolves around cattle, sheep, and deer farming. Is local history your thing? Take a look at all things Heritage and Culture here.
