Kākā Point | Nugget Point

The Catlins is also home to the quaint sea-side village of Kākā Point - named after the Kākā, New Zealand’s large brown bush parrot.

Surfers flock to this area for its famous breaks, and Nugget Point, one of New Zealand’s most iconic lookouts. It attracts visitors to its historic lighthouse, wildlife encounters and panoramic views out towards the Southern ocean.

Pack your own kayak? Paddle out and witness up close how the sun shines directly onto the famous “nuggets”, illuminating them like rocks of gold.

Learn about the unique locals who have called this settlement home, including famous Māori poet, Hone Tuwhare, who spent much of his life living in a beachside home, which residents aptly name “cribs”.

Experience the local hospitality and relive the day’s adventures while enjoying fresh local seafood as the sun goes down at beachside café and bar, The Point.

All of this is only a short drive from the district's hub of Balclutha. Discover more about this pristine paradise with more Catlins must-do’s.
