001 Lake Waihola

Waihola

Nature lovers flock to this area, which is set on the edge of Lake Waihola, New Zealand’s most inland tidal lake. If you’re biking or walking the Clutha Gold Cycling and Walking Trail, from March 2023, you will be able to extend your ride from Lawrence out to Lake Waihola.

While you’re here, enjoy the nearby Sinclair Wetlands - Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau, an  internationally renowned haven for wildlife, thanks to the efforts of the local community. Wander the 315-hectare privately-owned wetland, spot black swans, and learn about the amazing conservation efforts taking place. Don’t forget to appreciate the 30-million-year-old whale and dolphin fossils at the nearby lookout over Lake Waihola.

If you have time to venture inland off the beaten track, head to the man-made Lake Mahinerangi, which has brown trout and perch. Pack your winter woollies as this area can get chilly all year round.

Milton and its surrounding area has many more spots to enjoy. Learn more about the area here or view our suggested itineraries here
