Mount Stuart Reserve
For a lovely day out from Milton, drive to popular spot; Mount Stuart Recreational Reserve - or for those cyclists venturing down the Clutha Gold Cycling and Walking Trail, this reserve is a perfect rest stop. The area features a range of significant specimen trees including sequoia, oak, lime, poplar and Dutch elm, some of which were planted more than 100 years ago when the reserve was part of the adjacent homestead garden.
After a period of neglect, the reserve has been restored to its former glory with support from the Clutha District Council, Community Probation Services Dunedin, and Otago Regional Council, and is lovingly maintained by volunteers.
Meander the reserve then take a pleasant stroll along the Woolshed Valley Track - a well-traversed 40-minute return walking track from the reserve that follows the Tokomairiro River through bush to Woolshed Valley at Glenore.
Nab a dose of railway history while you are there and visit the railway viaduct, constructed in the 1870s, which formed part of the Milton to Lawrence rail corridor. Cross the State Highway at the reserve entrance and take a short walk up Falla Burn Road to the railway relics.
