Ōwaka - The Local Ride (Catlins Cycle Route)
This is a short journey, ideal for younger riders, families or simply if you want a quick look around. Traversing the back streets of Ōwaka, this ride provides you a flavour of the town and might even allow you an opportunity to bump into a local for a chat.
Distance: 3km loop
Surface conditions – Fully sealed but includes a small gravel lane way of approximately 300 metres.
Gradient – This is predominantly a flat ride with a few minor rises along the way. Elevation gain: 25m.
Directions – From the Ōwaka public carpark start riding down Waikawa Street towards the Southern Scenic route. Turn left on Hugh Street once you pass the sports grounds. (Note the small railway memorial as you make this turn). Continue riding around the sports ground following Macandrew and Bell Streets. Turning right from here onto Stuart Street, you will make your way past the Catlins Area School, onto Ovenden Street. Make sure you turn onto the gravel into the car parking area of the Ōwaka Community Centre and make your way to the small track between the Swap Shop and the community swimming pool. Head down the track, over the stream to Keatoa Street and up the road to Royal Terrace. From there you will join the main road, taking a quick right onto Clarke Street. The final leg is up Ryley Street to the Catlins Inn, the right onto Campbell Street past the Museum back to the start.
