Sod Cottage

Built in the 1860s as a stopover for miners seeking fame and fortune on the Tuapeka goldfields, Sod Cottage is a charming relic of the district's gold rush era.

Located on State Highway One just south of Milton, the cottage was originally constructed from wattle and daub (mud and straw) and has since been lovingly restored and reopened in 1970. Visitors can explore the rustic interior with low-profile roof and charming relics to get a glimpse back in time to what daily life was like for those gold diggers on their way to the goldfields. For an added dose of heritage and culture including fascinating displays depicting the lives of the early settlers, stop in at the Tuapeka Goldfields Museum in Lawrence.
