Matai and Horseshoe Falls & Rail Trail
Take a trip back in time and immerse yourself in nature with the triple delight of Matai Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and the historic railway line. Nestled in the heart of the lush rainforest in Catlins Forest Park, these popular sites can be explored easily within an hour or two.
Along the Southern Scenic Route, look for signs for the Matai Falls walk and make your way through the regenerating podocarp and broadleaf forest for 10 minutes to reach the cascading 10-metre high waterfall. These lower falls cascade over a rocky ledge, surrounded by towering trees and a carpet of ferns. When the river is running high, take the steep short climb upstream to witness the upper Horseshoe Falls. Be sure to visit around midday when the falls are at their best light.
From the Matai Falls track, visitors can also access the old railway line. This one-hour return walk passes through cleared forest and embankments that once formed part of the historic railway. Enjoy scenic views, soak up the area’s natural and historical features, pack some lunch, and take a well-deserved rest at the picnic spot at the top end of the trail.
