The park was formed by the Otago Southland War Amputees Association in 1949, and there is plenty of detailed information about the history of the park that can be found on the information panels. The park contains a playground, toilets and just 25 metres beyond the park, a safe, well sheltered beach. There are several tracks that lead down to the beach from the park or from the end of Palmer Place, this is a favourite spot for swimmers and surfers. Low tides are the best time to explore the rocks, with pools full of anemones, coloured seaweeds, coloured seaweeds, cockabullies, starfish and crabs.
