Lawrence Cemetery
Immerse yourself in local pioneering history at the Lawrence Cemetery, established around 1866. Wander through its peaceful grounds where numerous goldminers, such as George and Helen Munro are laid to rest. Originally divided into sections based on religious affiliations, the cemetery has a dedicated area for Chinese gold miners, including the notable tomb of Sam Chew Lain, a famous hotelier and astute businessman. The nearby Tuapeka Goldfields Museum and Visitor Centre and further paints a picture of the remarkable tales of New Zealand’s gold mining past with artefacts on display belonging to many of the cemetery's inhabitants.
