Blue Mountains

With one of the largest herds of wild deer in the South Island, and breathtaking panoramic views, the Blue Mountains are both a hiker and hunter's delight. 

Lying between the towns of Lawrence and Tapanui, this rugged range rises to 1,019 metres forming a natural barrier between the river valleys of the Clutha and Pomahaka offering spectacular 360 degree views over the Clutha District. Traverse through native forest where you can spot wood pigeons, and warblers, catch a rare glimpse of the mohua, the yellow bush canary, or hunt wild deer (permits required).

Start the 6-8 hour challenging hike from either Whisky Gully or Black Gully with huts and campsites available.
